A5 postcard from Serious Business Women’s “Why You Do That” 2026 exhibition
Acrylic paint markers and spray paint on plastic table fan
This hand-painted piece is inspired by floral motifs found in Indonesian batik textiles, with references drawn from Batik Makers and Wearers by the Asian Civilisation Museum. The colours are adapted from a 20th-century Central Javanese Batik Tulis, while the patterns have been interpreted through the artist’s ornamental style. By transferring motifs traditionally worn on the body onto a functional household object, the work explores how cultural references can inhabit everyday life. The fan remains fully operational, transforming ornament beyond decoration into a vessel for history, memory, and movement.
